Be prepared!

How can we react quickly and effectively to unexpected disasters? How do we develop the right rapid response fundraising products and tell compelling stories to maximize aid revenue? How do we guarantee maximum flexibility for editors while ensuring a consistent user experience? These were the questions driving Save the Children Switzerland as they redesigned their website. Our advice: Be prepared! Good strategic and conceptual preparation is the be-all and end-all And with the right tools it’s easy to get started. Save the Children Switzerland followed our lead. Their new website is born ready!

Challenge – The art of burning digital bridges
Mobile first, SEO, multilingualism, loading time, etc. are always on the long list of requirements when creating or revising a website. However, we faced additional obstacles. The challenge when creating a fundraising optimized website was twofold: How can we create an intuitive bridge between the content (topics, regions, projects) of the website and the donation possibilities of Save the Children Switzerland? And: How can we manage to design and develop this bridge in such a way that it can be quickly expanded or “rebuilt” as needed?

Solution – A few well-matched tools make for a perfect donation platform
There are several aspects that we addressed specifically for Save the Children Switzerland. We would like to highlight five points:

  1. Intuitive and expandable information architecture: This allows donation products to be flexibly linked to website content.
  2. Landing page builder completely optimized for fundraising: Within minutes, donation product pages can be developed and immediately integrated into the website.
  3. RaiseNow widget configurator: The donation form on the respective checkout page is completely aligned with the product (donation purposes, intervals, amounts, etc.).
  4. Totally customizable checkout process: the entire donation flow (checkout page & thank you page) is tailored to a specific product.
  5. Intuitive and flexible CMS: Diverse page types and content elements give editors flexibility while ensuring consistency of user experience.

“With getunik’s reliable and flexible work and competent support, we were able to realize our vision of a new website. Their expertise has also allowed us to master the bigger challenges a nonprofit faces. We are delighted that we can bring the work that we do for the most disadvantaged children – in Switzerland and across the world – closer to our donors and interested parties with such a modern and user-friendly website.”

Implementation – Teamwork makes the Dream work!
Sounds like a cliché? Well, it’s true: teamwork is the key to success. In multiple workshops and in close cooperation with Save the Children, the various user journeys were designed and prioritized based on goals, data analyses and the organization’s personas. On this basis and with our nonprofit experience, the concept – including content architecture, wireframes and required content elements – was developed. After laying this groundwork, we moved on to developing a design, fine-tuning it and eventually implementing the finishing touches.

Effect – So that more people give more and more can be received!
At Save the Children Switzerland the result can not only be seen, but also “felt”. The conversion rate of website visitors increased by 64% in the first 5 months after the relaunch compared to the same period last year. In addition, we were able to prove that the number of transactions per week has doubled since the relaunch, due to a stronger focus on online marketing in combination with a new website. But more importantly, Save the Children is now able to respond to humanitarian disasters within mere hours and collect donations for the affected countries, projects and people (example: Beirut, Coronavirus). Because when more people give more, more reaches the projects. This is ultimately the motivation behind the work we do!

“Seeing how quickly and successfully Save the Children Switzerland can raise financial support for projects with the new website is exactly what drives us as an agency.”

getunik took these steps to
support Save The Children Switzerland:

Creating simplicity despite complexity
During the design of the page types and elements, the main challenge was to ensure their flexibility all the while guaranteeing a consistent user experience for the future. Beyond considering the status quo, our task was to create a template that enables new and different combinations of elements and page types.

Intensive collaboration with a lot of commitment and even more joy
For our iterative approach a lively exchange was the order of the day – even after the first workshops. As an agency, we asked ourselves the question ‘How can we design the backend in such a way that the client can expand on the content structure with new pages and content elements as intuitively as possible?’ This was critical because Save the Children were in charge of creating and implementing content for the new website. Following a CMS training entering the content was “just” a formality and the website was ready to go live.
